Washington, D.C. - Day 5

Blogger was being stupid the night I wrote this, so I had to post a day late.

Today was my last full day here! We had a long day even though we didn't go very far - just the Newseum over by the Capitol, and just around the corner from my uncle's condo for everything else. The Newseum really took it out of me though - I am mentally and physically exhausted.

I've been waiting to see the Newseum for a couple of years - my grandpa and my uncle have been there and have raved about it. I've been reading USA Today since I was about 8, so I've always been interested in the media, and writing, and journalism, and editorial cartoons... I was excited to see all the live press coverage streaming all around the museum on the inside, and the front page papers from the states on the outside. We were able to look at international front pages as well - which is on their website. Too cool!

The 9/11 and Katrina exhibits were fascinating (and difficult to see). We watched a film about 9/11 and everyone in there was getting pretty upset, you could see it. It was hard to watch. There was also a short video about a photographer who went to take photos before the second tower fell and he was killed when it did - his wife talks about him and how he ran out there to capture what was happening - and they had a display of photographs which were all rare and close looks. Plus, they had part of the antennae on display from one of the towers.

They really did a good job with the Katrina exhibit too - timeline, front page articles lined up as the crisis continued, and interviews with journalists who were involved. I was a freshman in high school during Katrina and I didn't really think about the issues if presented (race, for instance), until today.

The Pulitzer Prize photography section was amazing as well. I could have spent even more than the half hour that I did, reading the stories about these spectacular photos. Some of them are quite famous. Those were also hard to look at, but so worth it. We were there from 11-4 but saw almost everything! We went to a nice dinner, and had smoothies AND went to Pitango for sorbet again later =D! Woo! This is my vacation, so it's all completely justified. We also watched Dave, which was a hilarious movie - Sean, you need to watch it.

I'm going home tomorrow and I have a few more blog posts floating around in my head, so I'll be back soon :)
