Musicalities

Music is a huuuuuge part of my life - whether I'm in the car, sewing, working out - I've got my songs around. Little known fact about me: I can't drive a car without music on, when I'm alone. I can't. It absolutely freaks me out. So even though my current car doesn't have an iPod jack, I burn CDs for it, and I get by. I also RARELY listen to the radio, and I know almost none of the top ten songs in any given month. And I'm okay with that.

My musical tastes change with my mood. If I'm starting something out, like a new project, a drive, or a work out walk, I'll put on something upbeat. When I'm tired or sad, I have a very lengthy playlist on my iPod called "sleepies," which contains slow songs and ballads. Good stuff.

As of July 10, 2011, here are my favorite singers/bands and my favorite songs by them, which get played often - maybe you'll find some musical inspiration - and this is in no particular order, except the first one:

Coldplay. It is known to those who are closest to me that I cannot die happy until I have attended a Coldplay concert (see my bucket list). This must happen soon. I've been listening to them for about 7 years, and their songs never get old for me. A lot of people were disappointed when they came out with the Viva la Vida album because their sound changed, but honestly, that's what I LOVE about Coldplay - all their songs are different, and they speak to me.
Favorite songs: "In My Place" (never, ever, ever gets old - probably my favorite), "The Scientist," "Life in Technicolor 2" (my favorite work out song), "Princess of China," "Hurts Like Heaven," "Paradise," "Charlie Brown," "Up With the Birds," "Strawberry Swing" (third favorite - I listen to this while driving ALL THE TIME), "Fix You," "Lovers in Japan," "Christmas Lights," "Viva la Vida," "Sparks" (second favorite I think), "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall," "Green Eyes." (I know, SO many favorites for this band. They are my ultimate favorite though. They have a song for every occasion/emotion, in my opinion :) )

Blue October. I've been listening to them for about 5 years, and they are fantastic. This is one band that Mike and I both enjoy - that is rare. They are known for being a little "emo" but I don't see them that way at all, in the negative connotation that "emo" often gets. But they have awesome lyrics, and I love listening to them when I'm traveling to class or in the car.
Favorites: "18th Floor Balcony" (for me, in the running for wedding song - definitely my favorite), "Calling You," (second favorite), "Graceful Dancing," "Blue Skies," "You Make Me Smile" and "Sound of Pulling Heaven Down" (tied for third), "Congratulations," "The Follow Through," "The Worry List."

Michael Buble. I would love to see him in concert, too. A lot of his songs are covers, but I love them. He has a fantastic voice - and it doesn't hurt that he's good-looking.
Favorites: "Moondance," "Haven't Met You Yet," "Everything," "Sway," "Save the Last Dance for Me" (there are also great remixes of these last two), "Quando, Quando, Quando," "Put Your Head on my Shoulder" (a song I will always love, no matter who sings it, because my dad used to dance to it with me when I was little).

Jack Johnson. My first concert. What is there to say? His music is so beachy and since I love the beach, there you go. He has awesome lyrics too, and a song to fit every mood. And he was amazing and really humble in concert!
Favorites: "Constellations" (favorite), "Bubble Toes," Angel," "Do You Remember" (triple tied for second favorite), "Banana Pancakes" (a song I associate with Mike :) ), "Better Together," "Turn Your Love," "Good People," "Pictures of People Taking Pictures," "Flake."

Muse. They were my second concert, and they were supermegafoxyawesomehot. Insanely amazing. Loud. But amazing. Ears ring for several hours loud. But, again, amazing.
Favorites: "Unintended," "Starlight" (these two are tied for first in my mind), "Plug In Baby," "Supermassive Black Hole," "Invincible" (this song grew on me so much and I LOVE it now) (hence the favoriting), "Time is Running Out," "Falling Away With You."

Vampire Weekend. "I LOVE VAMPIRE WEEKEND!!!" = what I told my baffled roommate Kristina when she had come back from a weekend away and had suggested I listen to them. I also forgot to tell her this for about three hours that we were in the same room together. Basically, that just sums it up. Also on my "beachy/summery" playlist. Different kind of sound. I'd love to see them in concert.
Favorites: "Holiday," "M79," "Giving Up the Gun," "The Kids Don't Stand a Chance," "Oxford Comma," "I'm Going Down," "Horchata."

Train. I've been a fan of Train since the song "Drops of Jupiter" was released (2001) (I just looked that up). They've come out with some great stuff before and since then, and I love their lyrics as well. ESPECIALLY their ballads = love.
Favorites: "Drops of Jupiter," "Drive By," "Hey, Soul Sister" (I loved this song BEFORE it was way overplayed, and still enjoy it, so I'm counting it as a favorite,) "Marry Me" (close contender for our wedding song even though lots of people are using it - again I loved this one before it got popular), "Meet Virginia" (oldie but goodie), "Save Me San Francisco" (I'm blasting this one when I finally fly to California one day,) "Calling All Angels."

Keane. Another band that always manages to make me happy. If you listen to them often their songs start to sound similar but I still love them all the same. I think they also have great lyrics (all these bands do, who am I kidding). I love how Keane and Coldplay are so NOT American - pleasing the European side of me.
Favorites: "Somewhere Only We Know" (probably will always be my favorite), "Stop for a Minute," "The Lovers are Losing," "Perfect Symmetry," "Everybody's Changing."

Mumford and Sons. They are newly popular and I really love the "Scottishness" to their music - something different - as well as the mellow feel. They are definitely my favorite new group.
Favorite songs: "The Cave," "White Blank Page" (favorite), "Winter Winds, "Awake My Soul."

Update #1:
Good Old War. They are a little bit on the folky side, but I love their lyrics and their sound. Good driving music. I saw them perform at my college :)
Favorite songs: "My Own Sinking Ship," "While I'm Away," "I'm Not for You," "Coney Island," "That's What's Wrong," "Just Another Day"

fun.. (two periods because the band name is "fun." :) ). Julie admonished me for not including them in my initial list. I guess I just wasn't on a fun. kick at the time. For me, I really have to be on a kick to listen to them now because I listened to them so much in the past. But, I've seen them twice in concert, and they are awesomeeeeeeee.
Favorite songs: "Some Nights" (current favorite), "We Are Young" (especially the acoustic version), "The Gambler," "At Least I'm Not As Sad (As I Used To Be)," "I Wanna Be the One," "Walking the Dog," "Take Your Time (Coming Home)."

Awesome Broadway soundtrack rundown: Les Miserables, Ragtime (most of that musical is music and I will listen to the entire show all the way through sometimes, it's definitely my favorite), Wicked, Little Shop of Horrors (the show is okay but the music is fantastic), Phantom of the Opera, Seussical (which I can't listen to often because it's the only play I've been in twice and it gets on my nerves, but I still love the music), Rent, Thoroughly Modern Millie (select songs), Hairspray (same), Aida (same).

Awesome other soundtrack rundown: Lord of the Rings (all three) by Howard Shore (I listen to this all the time, still, 10 years after the first movie came out, because they are so, so, so perfect), Final Fantasy IX and X, 500 Days of Summer, P.S. I Love You, Alexandre Desplat's pieces from the Harry Potter and Twilight movies, Michael Giacchino's pieces from "Up," A Very Potter Musical, and A Very Potter Sequel.

Whew. That took a while. Did you find anything you're curious about? Ask me!
